BWXT: Designing the user interface for a vacation request tool
Project Background
A prominent government contractor, BWXT, had developed a new vacation request system to support their unlimited vacation policy. However, they needed assistance in creating an interface that was not only functional but also user-friendly and visually appealing.
The mission
To design an intuitive vacation request system that streamlined approvals and formalized the process for human resources while maintaining a polished user experience.
The solution
Using our expertise in graphic design, websites, and user experience, we consulted and creatively directed the user-interface design of BWXT’s time-off tool system. We worked collaboratively across technical teams and HR to design the skin of the interface that would be applied by developers.
Understanding the problem we are designing for
To creatively direct the look of the tool, we needed to understand the ideal workflow BWXT aimed to achieve. This meant learning about BWXT’s multi-level approval structure and every step of the vacation request process and, getting brought up to speed on wireframes their team developed.
We identified that the UI would need to:
- Effortlessly work with BWXT’s SAP platform
- Be optimized for desktop, tablet and mobile
- Be easy-to-use requiring minimal training for HR teams
Taking an informed design approach
In our design approach, we focused on creating an interface that would appeal to employees of all tech-savviness levels. The design incorporated contemporary visual elements, aligning with current UI/UX trends while maintaining a professional appearance suitable for a government contractor.
We anchored our designs in 3 key pillars:
Responsive design: We ensured the interface was fully responsive, allowing employees to access the system from various devices, including desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
Accessibility: The design adhered to accessibility standards, ensuring that all employees could use the system regardless of any visual or motor impairments.
Brand integration: We incorporated the company’s branding elements into the design, creating a cohesive look that aligned with their overall visual identity.
The impact
Stryve’s expertise in UX and digital interfaces ensured that BWXT’s tool successfully delivered in look, feel and function:
- Expanded digital infrastructure: Created a system that supports, enforces and makes company policies possible.
- HR efficiency gains: Reduced manual tracking meant HR could focus on higher value initiatives.
- Reinforced employer brand: Showcased BWXT’s commitment to innovation internally and pursuing employee satisfaction.
